Description
The strongest grower of any Koreanspice Viburnums in our gardens, ‘Spice Girl’ is prized for her profusion of incredibly fragrant and colorful snowball-like spring flowers. Clusters of colorful pinkish red buds open to soft-pink flowers gradually turning to white that fill the garden a with wonderful spicy-sweet perfume like no other. Cut a few flowers off to enjoy them indoors in your favorite vase. Following the flowers, upright facing clusters of red berries and then dark green suede-like leaves turning to glorious burgundy wine color add to the overall appeal of this attractive flowering shrub through the seasons. Make sure to plant this one near patios, decks, porches and other outdoor areas where the fragrance can be enjoyed from up close.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 7 feet tall and equally as wide, the Spice Girl Viburnum is ideal for use as a specimen, grouping or natural hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Also a nice accent in home foundation plantings. As she grows taller, lower limbs can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree. Make sure to plant near patios, porches, decks and other outdoor living spaces where the pretty flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed from up close. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 5.5 feet apart for hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Viburnum is very easy to grow in moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers a loamy soil so amend heavy clay or poor soils with compost, bagged top soil or other organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants, it does not like constantly soggy or wet conditions. Very drought tolerant when established and we’ve seen no serious pest or disease problems. Deer haven’t touched it in our gardens. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight for best flowering. Responds very well to pruning for shaping, size control and tree forming. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.
