A Sweetshrub (Calycanthus) that actually lives up to its name. The abundant, spider-like, deep maroon flowers of ‘Simply Scentsational’ are guaranteed to please the senses with a pineapple bubblegum aroma that won’t go unnoticed when you come anywhere near the plant. It took Tim Wood of Spring Meadows 18 years to refine fragrant wonder that blooms from late spring through mid summer. The flowers are powerfully fragrant, even when they’re aged. With a fragrance that is sure to please the soul, this is one you just really have to smell for yourself.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and wide, Simply Scentsational Sweetshrub is ideal for use as a specimen, grouping, background or natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape or flowering shrub and woodland borders. To enjoy the fragrance from closeup, make sure to plant this one near a window or entryway where the fragrance may drift indoors. Plant additional plants by a favorite path or near outdoor sitting and living areas. A fine addition to cottage gardens, red theme gardens, wildlife gardens, and North American native plant gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Simple Scentsational Sweetshrub is exceptionally easy to grow in a most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We’ve seen no serious insect or disease problems and plants are quite drought tolerant when established.
