Description
An outstanding cross hybrid between Viburnum rhytidofyllum and Viburnum utile, the Prague Viburnum is a very desirable evergreen flowering shrub featuring elongated dark green leaves year round that serve as an excellent backdrop for abundant domed clusters of pink buds that open to fragrant white flowers in spring. The flowers are followed by red berries that the birds will enjoy well into winter. It forms a large, multi-stem shrub to about 8 to 12 feet tall and wide making it a fine landscape selection for a specimen, background to lower growing plants or as a natural hedge or screen.
Good pollinators for better berry production on Prague Viburnum are ‘Alleghany’, ‘Willowwood’, ‘Conoy’, ‘Chesapeake’ or ‘Eskimo’ viburnums.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and wide at maturity, the Prague Viburnum can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree. Either way, it is an eye-catching specimen or natural hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Also useful to frame corners of homes or other buildings or as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. A fine addition white theme gardens, wildlife gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 8 feet apart for solid hedge; 16 feet or more apart for space between plants.
Growing Preferences
Viburnum is very easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers a loamy soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants it does not like constantly soggy or wet conditions. Quite drought tolerant when established and we’ve seen no serious pest or disease problems. Deer haven’t touched it in our gardens. For best flowering, at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested. Responds very well to pruning for shaping, size control and tree forming. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.

I was surprised by how big and healthy the plants I received were. They were packed minimally but in a way that prevented damage.———————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and wonderful review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I ordered this viburnum for a huge pot in my back garden in Brooklyn and am so happy with it. I was especially inclined to go with Wilson Bros because they had detailed instructions on their site for how to plant and care for viburnum in containers, which I followed closely. The plant arrived very well packed, and after planting a couple of weeks ago remains healthy and is already showing new growth. I can’t wait to see what it looks like after a few seasons and when it starts to bloom. My partner purchased a camellia from Wilson Bros around the same time and is similarly happy with his experience. We’ll definitely purchase more plants from Wilson Bros in the future.—————————————————-We are so glad you and your partner are pleased and we hope ya’ll enjoy your plants for years to come! The plants arrived in good shape. They show new growth on them already. The packaging was very good. Fed Ex first reported that they would arrive early, but considering the distance that was impossible. Then they had no location. When they said Troutdale OR, I knew the packages would be here the next day. My neighbor wanted to order some after he saw them, but they were already “out of stock”.—————————————————Tell your neighbor to put his name on the waiting list. We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the kind words and great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
