Description
Living up to its name, the Planet Earth Arborvitae forms a perfectly rounded dense globe without the need for any trimming. At 4 to 5 feet tall when all grown up, its formal shape, hardiness and low-maintenance qualities make it a perfect selection as an accent or informal hedge row in sunny home foundation plantings and landscape borders. Also excellent in pots, planters and other containers. Dense, lacy, rich green “fans” of disease-resistant foliage turn an attractive bronze shade during winter in cold climates. Has stood up to our heat and humidity here in north-central Georgia and we hear it is cold hardy as far north as USDA Zone 4 where temperatures can drop to -30F.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing naturally in a perfect global shape 40 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, about 5 feet tall and wide, the Planet Earth Arborvitae is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or as a straight or staggered row in sunny home foundation plantings and landscape borders. Place one on either side of the front steps, driveway, walkway or other entrances to accentuate and frame the entryway. Great for use in pots, planters and other containers as well and a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and formal gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 7 feet apart or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Being a North American native plants, Planet Earth Arborvitae is very are very easy to grow in most any type of moist but well-drained soil of average fertility, including amended clay, and full to mostly sun. Some light shade is tolerated but too much shade and the foliage will thin. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. Has moderate drought tolerance when established but does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil. Maintenance is minimal with very little if any pruning ever required. Feed in spring with a slow-release shrub & tree fertilizer as directed on the product label.
