Description
Prized for its tremendous floral display in spring, Rhododendron periclymenoides, commonly called Pinxterbloom Azalea, is a North American native that thrives in shady to partially shaded moisture retentive sites from Massachusetts to South Carolina and Tennessee. Possibly the most profuse bloomer among native azaleas, abundant clusters of soft pink or soft lavender or white, slightly fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers with 5 inch long curved red stamens open just prior to emergence of the leaves.
The common name of “pinxter” means Pentecost (seventh Sunday after Easter) in Dutch, in reference to the bloom time for this shrub.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, the Pinxterbloom Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in woodland borders or other areas of the landscape that provide dappled shade and moisture retentive soil. That said, plants can tolerate a drier soil. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, Azalea gardens, woodland gardens, native plant gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for natural hedge; 10 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Pinxterbloom Azalea is easy to grow in moisture retentive to moist but well-drained, acidic, humus rich soil…but not a wet one or in standing water. Once established it will tolerate somewhat drier soils. It will tolerate sun in its northern range but definitely needs some afternoon shade in hotter climates further south, where leaves might scorch from direct afternoon sun. Native azaleas are very low-maintenance, requiring little if any pruning. That said, snipping of spent flower clusters is okay and will help to maintain a fuller plant and occasionally we might prune a stray branch that is growing way outside the natural form of the plant, but not so much that it would spoil the form of this beautiful shrub. As with most other azaleas, plants will benefit from mulch, such as shredded wood mulch or pine straw, which help retain moisture and decompose into rich organic matter the plants will appreciate.

I purchased two pinxter azaleas bushes from you which arrived in perfect shape. They are very healthy and robust plants, brimming with buds. I’ll be planting them next week in the nearby woodlands where they are native. I am sure they will thrive. Thank you!———————————-You are welcome! The rhododendrons arrived in pots (better than the plastic bags around a root ball that was used by another company) and seem fine…the proof of course will be in how they do once planted and how they grow over the next year. One had leaves a bit bent–not broken–and those leaves still grow in a bent direction, but hopefully that will work itself out in time.——————————————–Keep us posted! We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
Beyond thrilled at notification that plant was back in stock. Delivery was fast, plant well packed and arrived in top condition. The plant was more sizable and more lushly compact than I expected. It has not lost a leaf and is growing. My experiences with this nursery have always been extremely favorable.
