Description
A sport from the ever-popular purple flowering Formosa Azalea, ‘Pink Formosa’ is the rarest of the large growing, heat and sun tolerant Southern Indica Hybrid. In spring, an explosion of large pink flowers with a blue cast nearly cover the dark green evergreen foliage on a mounding shrub that grows 6 to 8 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide over time. The Southern Indicas grow more rapidly and much larger than other azaleas, which makes them a fine selection for a colorful natural hedge or screen in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide, the Pink Formosa Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. The plants perform exceptionally well under tall pine trees. Also ideal for use as accents, corner plants or as espalier against large open walls in home foundation plantings. With some pruning, lower branches can also be removed to form an attractive small evergreen tree that serves well as a focal point in the landscape or large containers. A fine addition to Azalea gardens, pink theme gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 5 feet apart for solid hedges; 12 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Southern Indica Azaleas are easy to grow in a moist but well drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. They prefer a soil rich in organic matter. Though full sun is tolerated, we think all azaleas perform and look their best when receiving some filtered sunlight during the hottest part of summer afternoons…and we also think azaleas just look better in a more natural environment around trees and not out in the middle of the lawn all by themselves. Established plants have good drought tolerance and require little to no pruning.
