Description
‘Jersey Girl’ is a stately beauty growing up to 60 feet tall and 30 feet or more wide with a straight trunk and an oak-like crown. After planting she’ll grow rapidly to provide you cool shelter from the blazing hot sun in the heat of summer. If you don’t want her as a large shade tree, she responds very well to pruning and can be cut back to the ground annually regrowing as a large shrub. Her cute, heart-shaped juvenile leaves, which become more elongated with age, are a soft green, and she produces clusters of attractive, white fuzzy flowers in summer. Her thick and fibrous bark is a grey-brown color and persistent on the trunk and the base of larger branches. On the upper branches and stems the bark is smooth and sheds in short ribbons. Highly adaptive, Jersey Girl grows well in most any type of soil, even fertile ones, which is uncommon with Eucalyptus.
Cold Hardiness
In our growing trials in McDonough, GA (Zone 8A), five-year old trees have had no damage after being planted from small, 4 inch container. All five of the ‘Jersey Girls’ are over 12’ tall and thriving. Extended trials in other regions are showing even more cold hardiness.
Landscape Uses
Growing up to 60 feet tall and up to 30 feet or more wide, ‘Jersey Girl’ is a fast growing larger Eucalyptus tree ideal for use as a specimen around patios, decks and other outdoor living spaces to provide shade, in groupings, or as a tall privacy screen in landscape borders. If you don’t want her to be a tree, Jersey Girl responds very well to pruning and can even be cut back to the ground every year quickly regrowing into a large shrub. It is one of the best Eucalyptus in the shade. Can be grown in large containers and is a fine addition to cut flower gardens, fragrance gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 10 to 15 feet apart for privacy screen; 40 feet or more apart for space between trees
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 8a, where this Eucalyptus tree variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Jersey Girl is easy to grow in most any soil, including fertile one (rare for Eucalyptus), and prefers full sun or part shade. She responds very well to pruning so can be grown in large pots that can be situated on patios and near other outdoor living spaces. Choose a container that’s at least 10 inches or more in diameter than the root ball.
