Description
A intergeneric cross hybrid between our native Calycanthus floridus and Sinocalycanthus chinensis, ‘Hartlage Wine’ was developed at the JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University and named after student Richard Hartlage. It is adored for its stunning, magnolia-like, wine-red flowers which bloom in late spring to early summer, often repeating in summer. Its lush, broad elliptic, emerald green leaves are attractive just on their own and turn to a buttery yellow in fall. A fast grower, Hartlage Wine forms an impressive shrub to 10 feet tall and wide so make sure to leave space for it to grow.
Plants in the genus Calycanthus are commonly called sweetshrub or strawberry bush in reference to the fragrant blooms which are often described as combining hints of pineapple, strawberry and banana. The flowers of Hartlage Wine are usually mildly scented.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and wide, the Hartlage Wine Sweetshrub is ideal for use as a specimen, grouping, background or natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and flowering shrub or woodland borders. Sweetshrub is ideal for planting close to the house near a window or entryway where the fragrance may drift indoors. Plant additional plants by a favorite path or sitting area. A fine addition to cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, and red or purple theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 7 feet apart for solid hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Sweetshrubs are exceptionally easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We’ve seen no serious insect or disease problems and plants are quite drought tolerant when established.
