Description
Guiding Promise is a floriferous shorter growing Clematis featuring abundant large and lovely flowers up to 5 inches across with purple to mauve-purple wavy-edged pointed petals surrounding prominent darker purple-red anthers. The flowers are produced from May through July and then again in fall. When trained to grow upward on a trellis, obelisk, fence or other structure it will reach 4 to 5 feet high, maybe a little shorter in containers which can be situated on patios or around other outdoor sitting or living spaces for up close viewing. Rambling through a perennial garden or shrub bed it might reach 2 to 3 feet high roaming to 5 feet wide or so. Guiding Promise has good strong stems that produce flowers from top to bottom of the plant. The flowers are excellent for cutting and display in floral arrangements.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Guiding Promise Clematis is ideal for use to roam through shrubs and other plants or can be trained on a trellis, obelisk, mailbox post or other short structure in garden beds or pots, which can be situated on patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting living spaces where the amazing flowers can be viewed from close up. A fine addition to Clematis gardens, purple theme gardens, cut flower gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2.5 to 3 feet apart to cover fences, trellises, and walls; 4 to 5 feet apart as a groundcover
Growing Preferences
Guiding Promise Clematis is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Though it tolerates dry periods when established, it will appreciate an occasional watering in prolonged periods of dry weather. Make sure not to plant this one too deep as it tends to smother the plant.
Clematis Pruning Group 3
Clematis in Group 3 consist of late-flowering species that bloom from mid-summer into fall. This group flowers on the last 2 to 3 feet of the current season’s growth (new wood). They are easy to prune because you do not need to maintain any old wood. In February or March, cut each stem to a height of 1 feet. Make sure to leave at least two good buds below where you make your cut. New growth will emerge from these buds to produce the current seasons vines and blooms.
