Description
After going through 5 years of field testing at locations all over the United States, Bailey’s says the results are in and the Endless Summer ‘Pop Star’ Hydrangea is with no doubts the most prolific rebloomer in their series, as well as the most compact. It forms a 2 to 3 foot tall and wide mound of thick, rich green foliage that becomes smothered in show-stopping electric blue or bright pink flowers, depending on soil pH; blue in acid soils and pink in neutral or alkaline soil. The unique lacecap flowers consist of a center cushion (cap) of fertile florets surrounded by a ring of sterile flowers around the center cushion. The foliage is so dense that it provides soil cover that makes it cold hardy into zone 4. A true breeding breakthrough, Pop Star sets the new standard for dwarf Hydrangeas and is perfect for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces, in containers, or in groupings or as a low hedge where space allows. Whether it’s in the garden or a decorative container, Pop Star will be a superstar that brings dazzling color in the landscape.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a rounded mound 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the Popstar Hydrangea is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces, in containers, or in groupings or as a low hedge or border where space allows. It is a fine addition to hydrangea gardens, butterfly gardens, cottage gardens and blue or pink theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Pop Star Hydrangea is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade, depending on your location. An acid soil will create more lavender-blue flowers while an alkaline soil creates pink flowers. The plants will tolerate full sun in northern zones however will appreciate some afternoon shade or filtered sun in warmer southern zones. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day or all day lightly filtered sun for best flowering. Unlike other mophead hydrangea, you can prune the Endless Summer hydrangeas at any time of year, though we suggest a late winter pruning and a deadheading (removal of faded flowers) after its first flush of blooms have faded. USDA Zones: 4a-9b Find Your Zone
Note: Pop Star Hydrangea is an everblooming Hydrangea macrophylla species that produces its flowers from buds formed on both new and old wood.
