Description
One of our favorites, ‘Conoy’ is the densest growing of all Viburnums growing in our gardens. At a height of 4 to 5 feet tall and 7 to 8 feet wide, we’d have no problem suggesting this super hardy and low maintenance evergreen flowering powerhouse shrub as a home foundation plant. LOADS of 3 inch diameter clusters with pink buds that burst open to lightly fragrant white flowers nearly cover the very deep green and glossy 2.5 inch long leaves in spring. In the winter the leaves take on a handsome purplish shade. If pollinated with another V. burkwoodi variety, in late summer and early fall the ripening clusters of one-third-inch long berries transition in stages from red to black as the fruit mature.
This hybrid Viburnum was developed by the late Dr. Donald Egolf who worked for more than 30 years as a plant breeder at the U.S. National Arboretum and introduced a number of landscape plants now commonplace in our gardens. ‘Conoy’ is a cross of Viburnum utile, an evergreen from central China, with Viburnum x burkwoodii ‘Park Farm Hybrid’, also an evergreen.
Note: In Zones 4a through 7a Conoy Viburnum may be deciduous to semi-deciduous depending on winter low temperatures.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and 7 to 8 feet wide, Conoy Viburnum is ideal for use as an eye-catching specimen shrub or in groupings in landscape borders, home foundation plantings, and flowering shrub borders. Perfect in sunny or partially shaded woodland borders. A fine addition to white theme gardens, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants.
Cultural Preferences
The Conoy Viburnum is very easy to grow in moist but well-drained to somewhat dry soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Deer haven’t touched it in our gardens. Responds well to light pruning after flowering for shaping purposes though doing so might remove berries.
