Description
Pinus strobus ‘Coney Island’ is an extremely rare and unique dwarf selection of our native White Pine discovered in Woodstock, CT. It features long, blue-green evergreen needles gracing a dense, globe-shaped, slow-growing shrub that might add 3 to 6 inches in height per year. Numerous, highly ornamental miniature cones, which are produced at a very young age, are an extra-added bonus. Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide over time, make sure to pick just the right spot to show off this beauty as it doesn’t like being transplanted once established. Can also be grown in pots, planters and other containers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, the Coney Island White Pine is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in sunny landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It can also be grown in containers for situating on patios, decks or around other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen spaced 6 feet or more apart in groupings
Growing Preferences
Though drought tolerant when established, the Coney Island White Pine grows best in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun, but will tolerate some light afternoon shade and appreciates it in hot climates. As with so many other ornamental shrubs and trees, a constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. Does not require pruning.
