Landscape & Garden Uses
A larger growing Camellia with an upright habit of growth 10 to 12 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide, the Blood of China Camellia can be grown as a shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge or background plant in landscape borders and is especially nice as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As this camellia grows taller lower branches can be removed to form a small evergreen tree that serves well as an attractive and colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. GA fine addition to camellia gardens, red theme gardens, Asian gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors during winter by those who live and garden above USDA Zone 6a, where this camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy. Find Your Zone
Spacing: 6 to 7 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.

I purchased this plant based on its color. I needed an orangey pinky red to add to my collection of camellias. I can find camellias at the local big box store, but the variety offered is limited. I find that Wilson Brothers has a good selection to choose from. Also, I’ve purchased from this company before and have consistently received healthy, nice sized plants. This purchase was no exception. I received the plant quickly and it is very healthy. It isn’t bloom time yet but judging from the new growth that the plant has already put on, I expect that I will see blooms when the time is right. Thanks, Wilson Brothers, for offering larger sized plants at a competitive price and for shipping with such care. I will be purchasing more from you this Fall!———————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! The camelia arrived quickly and in good health. I planted it in a sheltered location near my deck stairs. It’s only been a few weeks but it seems to be doing well so far. I’m hopeful for it to do well over time.———————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I have been longing for this not pink red camellia for years, but could never find it. I found a 3 gal pot online at Wilson Bros. It arrived quickly, in the peak of health and securely packed. Although it was nearing the end of camellia season, it has produced a few blooms, proving I got what I ordered!! The form of the plant sent is lovely. It’s living in its pot for a few weeks to be sure it doesn’t clash with the peonies. This is my first experience with Wilson Bros. I hope I can find room for more!!—————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
Received my Blood of China Camellia in good condition & lots of buds (well packed). Planted it a couple of days later and it is taking off – buds are opening and flowers are gorgeous (large). Took this pic after I snipped a couple of flowers off to put in vase.————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! I’m a landscape designer in Southern New England and over the years my experience with mail ordering plants has generally been disappointing. The stock is usually extremely small and vastly overpriced. However, I decided to give Wilson Bros a try and was extremely pleased with both the size and quality of the camellias I purchased. Though sold at retail pricing, the plants, which arrived in about a week, were comparable in size and quality to stock I would normally purchase at my favorite wholesale nursery. I would certainly recommend Wilson Bros as a source for southern plants not commonly available in the northeast or for gardeners, who don’t have access to a quality local nursery.——————————————–Thanks for the kind words!
