Description
April Dawn is a prized selection from the April Camellia Series, which were developed to have improved winter cold hardiness and a later bloom cycle than most other Camellia japonica.
One of the most cold hardy in the April Camellia Series, April Dawn Camellia produces an abundance of fragrant, eye catching double flowers with white petals streaked in dark pink dark, and also solid deep raspberry pink to almost red flowers on the same plant. We think this one should’ve been named ‘ April Candy Cane’ Camellia as it’s streaked petals definitely remind one of a candy cane. Blooming later than others, flowers start coming in late winter and continue through April, hence the name. The striking flowers are set against a perfect backdrop of glossy, deep green foliage. April Dawn’s upright narrow form lends well to smaller spaces where other Camellia japonica varieties won’t fit.
April Dawn is listed as cold hardy as far north as St Louis, Missouri USDA Zone 6.
Landscape & Garden Uses
A moderate growing Camellia with an upright habit of growth to about 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide, April Dawn Camellia can be grown as a shrub, esplier (flat against a wall), or small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a hedge or background plant, in groupings, and is especially nice as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall.) When “limbed up” to form a small tree it serves well as an attractive and colorful specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Great for cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors overwinter for those who live above USDA Zone 6a, where not winter hardy. Spacing: 3.5 feet apart for solid hedge; 5.5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.

I ordered Camellia April Dawn several weeks ago; the gallon sized bush arrived quickly after ordering. This item was packed with great care; it arrived healthy looking, and was hydrated. Wilson Bros are the tops in my book!!!! The plant continues to thrive, and is quite healthy!——————————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! I hope you don’t think this is strange, but I wanted to tell you how pleased we are with the plants we’ve ordered from you. Things like Camellias are never seen in our neck of the woods in Utah. They were a favorite of my wife’s when she was growing up in Louisiana. With the newer more cold hardy strains we decided to give them a try here. I worked some ground pine mulch into the soil and had you ship me some. As you can see we have enjoyed blossoms through April even though we had a few nights of single digit temps during the winter. Just about everyone who drops by asks what the flowers are blooming next to the porch.
Thank you for making the plants available to us. We enjoy having things in our yard that no one else has. ??—————————————————————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

I was amazed at how developed the camellia was. It’s got 6 buds on it and was expertly packaged. I live in NJ where I have mostly clay soil, so I added humus and watered with diluted root stimulator. Can’t wait for the flower buds to open.—————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
This looks beautiful and very healthy – glossy green leaves and some new buds already forming. Also larger than I had expected for a 1 gal. pot. I purchased this plant for my daughter’s Christmas gift. She lives about 15 miles from Lake Erie. She was thrilled with how beautiful the plant was upon arrival. It was healthy looking, very well packaged with no damage, still moist even though delivery was delayed two days due to weather. It has been in the ground two weeks and still looks beautiful!——————-WBG Reply: Hi Karen, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the April Dawn Camellia we are so happy you are pleased with your gift purchase and we hope your daughter enjoys it for years to come!

This was my second purchase from Wilson Bros.. Was so happy to find so many cold hardy camellias from one source. So I tested them out with my first order of one camellia. It arrived perfectly packed and beautiful with lots of buds! After that, I ordered many more varieties and have to say they were all of exceptionally good quality. Most had buds so my yard will have lots more color this winter and spring. Can’t wait to see all of them bloom. Customer service is excellent as well. Brent was very helpful answering all my questions. 5 stars on both the product and customer service. Will be buying much more from this excellent company in the future. Only one complaint: you have too many camellias to choose from…haha. Thanks! ————————– WBG Reply: Hi Sherri – Wow!…thanks so much for all your compliments and for taking the time to provide all your reviews on the camellias you purchased from us. We hope you enjoy them for years to come and your gardens are sure to be more beautiful at a time of year when not much else is blooming! Your compliments make everything we do even more worth the while. Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can do for you. We’re at your service! – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
I have just received my camellia. It is a beautiful little plant and is in perfect condition. It has already been planted into a decorative ceramic container. It is a great addition to my Japanese garden. I am looking forward to its first bloom. Thanks…. ——————- WBG Reply: Hi Karin – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review. Not that yours doesn’t, but just wanted to make sure the decorative container you planted the beautiful April Dawn in has a drainage hole in the bottom. Reason I bring it up is that, for one I can’t help from doing it…haha…but mostly to let all others who read this know that camellias, whether growing in the ground or in a container, require a well-drained soil, and that constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Hope you enjoy the April Dawn for years to come. Let us know if there’s ever anything we can help you with – we’re at your service! – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
